SENIORCLASSPROPHECYONCE WE WERE YOUNG AND CAREFREE---HERE WE ARE IN 1970I have just started my three month vacation from teaching the first graders here at Smithville GradeSchool. I got my first teaching experiences while I was still a senior at S.H.S. by helping the former teacher,Mrs. Martin. NANCY AXSOM now married to Mike Ketcham, the Navy Recruiting Officer in Bloomington, and I decided to tour the United States this summer visiting all our former classmates. Nancy and Mikehave two children and she teaches Home Economics at Smithville.Smithville, to everyone’s surprise, has developed into quite a little boom town since the Monroe CountyReservoir was built. It now has a populationof 1,300. Remembering that LINDA FENDER, one of our classmates, lives on the lake’s shoreline, we decided to visit her first. Now married to her high school steadyMorris Taylor, she teaches Physical Education at Harrodsburg School. They have a very exotic ranch house.Stopping in at the post office in Harrodsburg we found DORIS STRAIN there helping her mother. Dorisis not married yet, but is still looking for the right guy.Traveling back towards the vicinity of Smithville we decided to drop in on RUTH HILLENBURG for alittle chat. Naturally, being a proud mother she had to mention her daughter’s coming marriage.WILLIAM CLARK is now President for the L.W.L. Insurance Company in Smithville. After a lengthychat with William and his wife, the former Glenda Dawn Paragon, we discovered that after ten years ofmarriage they both can still truthfully sing “I only have eyes for you”.Stopping in at the apartments on the Smithville by-pass we found WENDELL SOUTHERN, his wife andtheir six children. We learned Wendell has quite a problem. His oldest son keeps skipping school. Well, theyalways said, “Like father, like son’’. Going next door we found HUBERT TIEMAN, his wife and family ofeight children. Hubert, so we heard, has not felt well since the day he got married. His wife works andsupports their family. But he is a good husband and father.Right around the corner was another classmate, MARTHA CARMICHAEL, who is now a very successfulveterinarian. We learned that her advice has been asked in such famous cases as the removal of an ingrowneyelash of a Chihuahua from Vienna. Martha and her husband have four children, two girls and two boys.As we started farther on with our journey we decided to stop for a meal at the Speedway. To our surprise DWIGHT MITCHELL was the owner of a chain of Speedway Restaurants across the country. He told usthat in his spare time he operates a barber shop. Dwight still carries the title of a carefree bachelor as hedid in high school.Leaving the Speedway we noticed we were low on gas. Stopping in at Webb’s Oil Station we discoveredthat LARRY WEBB had taken over his father’s business. Larry is now married to Sherry Bayne but stillhas an eye for a pretty girl. |
