Mr. Smith, as an experienced school administrator, gives generously of his talent, time, and strength in the encouragement of his pupils to higher goals of scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.MR. HARRY SMITHClass of 1964, you are about to finish twelve year s of intensive training in the public school system ofour country. The purposeofyour attendingthe various schools of this system has been manyfold. You haveacquired the various tools of learning that will aid you in the future study or in helping you to find your placein the scheme of things. You have explored the various fields of learning and have probably decided whichones you would like to specialize in in your further study and vocations of life. Some of you have developeda keen sense of appreciation of the heritage that has been handed to you from the past and feel deeply yourdebt to the people of yesterday.Probably the most important phase of your education is the learning of how to meet and associate withothers. Democracy cannot exist without our public school system. Its product is a better citizenship fortomorrow. It might appear to some that the end of these twelve years is the climax of one’s education.Whether you go on to the colleges, universities, trade schools or not, you will attend the two great schoolsof “Hard Knocks” or “Fire-Side University”. You have only begun to learn. Much is still ahead. Evaluatewhat you have done and use the same in your future study. Also note the things you should have done and didnot do, and profit by your mistakes. May you look back, may you open your eyes and see now, and may youstrive on toward the mark of higher calling.Harry Virgie Smith5 |
