What Shapes Us More—Things We Can Control Or Things We Cant Control?A. I think that things we cant control shape us morethan things we can control. For example, if you went toschool one day, and were given a pop-quiz you wouldhave to respond to that. Or if you left the country thatyou loved for so many years like I did [you would haveto respond to that, too]. Moving taught me to be moreopen to new schools and making new friends. So, overallI think that things we cant control that shape us morethan things we can.--Tim BrunerB. Well, that is a very good question. I suppose itdepends on who you ask. Some people would reply thatwe are shaped more by the little things we can control, such as our thoughts and our actions. But still otherswould reply that we are shaped more by the things wecannot control, such as gender, hair color, eye color, weight , race, skin color, how we turn out. But if youwent up to a teenager, some would just look at you andsay What the hell does that mean? Others stillwould just look at you and walk away. The ruder oneswould say !@!$# off you @#@$, and then walkaway. I do not really like that group. 1 doubt verymany of us do. But a lot would probably give you ananswer, complete with an explanation of why. I wouldbe part of the latter. I think that it is a little of both.Because I was born an American, I have grown up withrights that played an important role in my life. Butwhat I did with those rights, things that I couldcontrol, also helped me become who I am today. I amgrateful, and I am also grateful for how I came to be likethat. We all seem to consider that either somebodyelse shapes us or nobody does, which I think is strange.—Ruth Ridge-Colby9/27/99:5&6 make projects of Indiana Indians |
