beds so people know not to walk in that part and thenwhatever grass or trees or flowers are in there wont gettrampled. Theres just not enough paved area right nowfor as much as it gets used and I, personally, really likethe brick wall there. Its a place where people can sit.U-Its a good divider. The paper said that they wantto have less of a divider so its more open.KC: Maybe if they want to make it more open theycould make another opening in the middle of it orsomething so you wouldnt have to walk from thecenter.U-Did your children use the park?KC: Yeah, my youngest son still does.U-Is Harmony connected with the park at all?KC: No. Harmony School back then was such ababy. This was back in 1975. If it was even going it wastoo unorganized to be dealing with something like that.U-When was the black imports store?KC: That would have been 1969 or 68 but it wasfirebombed the winter of 68-69 or the winter of 69-7O.Once it was leveled, that first spring, a lot of peoplejust sort of spontaneously came in there and plantedsome trees and did some stuff. It was not well thoughtout or anything like that and as it matured it lookedkind of ratty but it was an effort by people to dosomething to make it look nice. After that there were afew times when we were exploring putting some otherkind of business back on the lot and it was always a bigoutcry mostly by the students not to do that. We endedup not doing those things. In the process of giving itover to the city it started becoming a place wherepeople were camping out and living. There were notoilet facilities or anything so people were just usingpart of the park as a bathroom. It was not a very nicescene and the city was starting to hassle me about it. Ididnt like going down and evicting these people butthats what I had to do because they were creating ahealth hazard and there were all these city ordinancesagainst it. That helped play a part in my deciding togive it to the city so that they could be responsible forit.U-Were there a lot of people that wanted to buy theland?KC: No, I dont think we really had too many, oreven anybody that came to us. Of course we didnt haveit listed for sale either, and to tell you the truth Ididnt handle the business as much back then. I hadlittle kids so there might have been some things thathappened that, because I was only peripherallyinvolved, I dont remember right now.T-CM |
