Description: @Ss59(>S^^©LJ^AMARADA655^S9QsaSr£>THE SCHOOL BUILDINGHistory of Ellettsville SchoolSince the founding of the town of Ellettsville, education facilities havenever been neglected. In the early history of the town, a public school systemwas organized and a building erected. The school was under the control of aschool board of three members, elected by the citizens of the town.In 1915, the consolidated school system was established in Indiana and astone structure was erected at Ellettsville. This new system did away with thetown school and abolished many of the country schools of the township. Thebuilding being the old addition of the present building was at the time one ofthe best buildings and best equipped in this section of the state. In 191.) theschool was the Richland township school but carried the name of EllettsvillePublic School. It was during the administration of Trustee Dudley F. Burksthat the reorganization took place. From 1915 to 1924, many more country schools were abolished and a steadyincrease of enrollments was made. During the years of 1924 and 1925, classeswere held in the basement and the assembly was so filled with seats that therewas scarcely any room for aisles. The officials of the school realized that improvement was necessary and therefore began to plan for a new building.Trustee 0. F. Moore, with the cooperation of Principal E. II. Mangel, securedthe best suitable plans and constructions to be had with the limited amount ofmoney available. The school year of 1925 and 26 witli the new building andequipment and a force of competent teachers started on a new era of progressin both activities and scholarship. Since this time the school has been greatlyimproved in various ways and in 1930 a permanent commission was granted bythe state board of education. The present school year, 1931 and 32, we have reached the peak of education with the largest enrollment in the history of the school. Many improvements have been made and Ellettsville school has become the High Hall ofLearning. The school year has been more than successful and has made a record which cannot be erased under the leadership of Principal II. C. Weathersand the cooperation of Trustee Charles Freeman.Maurice EndwrightPage FourmBHSSHB
