This new system did away with thetown school and abolished many of the country schools of the township. Thebuilding, being the old part of the present building, was at the time one of thebest buildings and best equipped in this section of the state. In 1915 the schoolbecame Richland Township School but carried the name of Ellettsville PublicSchool. It was during the administration of Trustee D. Frank Burke that thereorganization took place. From 1915 to 1924 many more country schools wereabolished, and a steady increase of enrollments was made. During the years of1924 and 1925 classes were held in the basement, and the assembly was so filledwith seats that there was scarcely any room for aisles. The officials of theschool realized that improvements were necessary and therefore began to planfor a new building. Trustee 0. F. Moore, with the cooperation of Principal E.H. Mangel, secured the best suitable plans and constructions to be had with thelimited amount of money available. The school years of 1925 and 1926, withthe new building and equipment and a force of competent teachers, started ona new era of progress in both activities and scholarship. Since this time theschool has been greatly improved in various ways, and in 1930 a permanentcommission was granted by the State Board of Education. The school now has seventeen teachers, seven in the first six grades andten in the upper six grades. Some of the courses given in the high school arecommercial, vocational, and academic. In 1940 several new improvements were made, including the construction of the new dressing rooms, balcony in the new gymnasium, and the newhome economics room. Also new lockers for the ball boys were purchased, andseveral hundred dollars worth of new books was added to the library. Theseimprovements make our school one of the finest and best equipped in the district. Under the co-operative leadership of our trustee, Carl F. Ryan and ourhigh school principal, Clarence Stewart, the school year has been very successful ; and it leaves a standard to follow in the future.Page Six |
