aClass HistoryIn September, 1921, eleven shy, wee girls in gingham dresses and hair ribbons and nine bashfullittle boys in white blouses and knee trousers entered Ellettsvilles hall of learning for the first time. Our ever faithful friend and teacher was Frances Brown. At this outstanding time in our lives we wishto pay honor and respect to this lady who has been in our school through all the intervening years. The years that we were in the remaining lower grades were for the most part uneventful. Theones who labored so earnestly to instruct us were Ruby Van Buskirk, Olive Hepley, Luella Mc-Shane, and Thelma Hawkins. In the autumn of 1927 we first took our long desired seats in the assembly; we were seventhgraders. H. D. McAdams organized our class with the following officers: President, Ralph Stevens;Vice-President, Harriet Curry; Secretary, Esther Knight; Treasurer, Gladys Kelly. During the eighthgrade Martha Ritenour was our sponsor; we had no officers. At the close of the school year Mr. andMrs. Mangel invited us to their home for our class party. In 1929 we were very proud to be in high school, but we soon lost our pride when we heardthe upper classmen say, Theyre as Green as a gourd! and Oh! dont they look dumb? Weselected as our sponsor M. M. Williams and the following officers: President, Emma Jean Stansbury; Vice-President, Ralph Stevens; Secretary, Frances Harding; Treasurer, Hubert Stimson. Wewere the first class to serve a Freshman banquet and in that way set a precedent which all the otherclasses have followed. On Saint Patricks Day the girls donned their green dresses and hair ribbonsand the boys their green shirts and neckties, and all had a jolly time together. That evening in thegymnasium we served our banquet to which we invited the faculty and the trustee, Mrs. Eva Moore. Our Sophomore year was uneventful except for long struggles with Latin, geometery, and English grammar. Our sponsors were Grace Cox and Carl Smith and our class officers were: President,Harriet Curry; Vice-President, Violet Jeanne Brown; Secretary, Juanita Stultz; Treasurer, Mary LouMay. Just before Christmas vacation we had a party in the gymnasium and exchanged gifts. Severalmembers of the class took part in the operetta, The Mysterious Master, directed by Maxine West.Nineteen thirty-one found thirty-three jolly Juniors returning to old E. H. S. We were carefree and happy and began formulating plans for the banquet and reception that we were to give thedignified Seniors. We had our gymnasium beautifully decorated to represent a Japanese garden, andit was voted by many the most artistic setting ever arranged in the Ellettsville School. Our sponsors,Carl Smith and Marie Perkins, were ever ready to lend a helping hand. Our officers were: President,Herman Gillespie; Vice President, Nellie Buskirk: Secretary, Emma Jean Stansbury; Treasurer,Frances Harding. We gave one dass play, Go Slow, Mary. On the last day of school we met toelect new officers for the coming year. The following were elected: President, Charles Sanders; Vice-President, Ralph Stevns; Secretary, Harriet Curry ; Treasurer, Frances Harding. The following daywe went on a picnic to Spring Mill State Park. When we said good-bye, we expressed a wish that allwould return the next fall.We now have come to the last year of our stay in Ellettsville High School and we are proud tosay that we are the largest class that has ever graduated from E. H. S. We have twenty-five in theSenior Class. With the cooperation of our sponsor, Carl Smith, we have realized our great ambition—the publishing of an annual. We have given one class play, The Path Across The Hill. From time to time old members of the class have left us, some quitting school entirely andothers moving to other localities. During the past year several members of the class of 1933 haveembarked upon the sea of matrimony; we offer congratulations and wish them all success and happiness. We are now saying good-bye to theBright and happy school days; dear old golden school days.Page Eleven |
