HfflSfflHHlHHGPONCE UPON A TIME -THIS WAS OUR HOMEIn 1872 when Dr. James Harris wastrustee and girls with pigtails and boysin short pants carried tin dinner pailsand slates, a large two-story brickschool building was erected on Temperance Street at a cost of $7,000.These students kept warm by pot-bellied stoves, sat in double seats, readfrom McGuffey Readers, sang themultiplication tables, and told whatthey had learned from recitationbenches. For variety and recreationthey vied for the privilege of carryingwater from the Johnson Sharp springor later from a nearby well, and thendrank it from a gourd. Because of thecrowded condition even in those days,a small frame structure was erectednext door for the primary department.THEN -IN 1915 -WE MOVED HEREAfter forty years of fostering education in this town and township, thebig brick was condemned, and thisstone structure was erected while D.F. Burke was trustee. It was the latest thing, having nine class rooms,central heating, and electric lights.Consolidation within the townshipcame, and in 1925 during the tenureof Frank Moore a combination gymnasium and auditorium was built whenstudents arriving on school buses increased the population.
