From creatinglesson plans to grading, its a wonder that any teacherwould be able to handle an extra dose of schoolactivity. However, English teacher Mrs. VanAllen didjust that. Returning to college to finish her mastersdegree in education,Mrs. VanAllen juggledboth the classes shetaught and the classesshe completed online. It was difficult, Mrs.VanAllen said. Iconsidered it as a sort ofpart-time job. Plus, I had to fix meals and do what Ineeded to do for my family, so time management wasespecially important throughout the process. Her children also witnessed this process, which theirmother readily persevered through. Senior ElizabethVanAllen noted her mothers humble behavior whenshe finally completed her masters degree. She actually really downplayed it a lot. She got itdone a couple days early and she just came into myroom and was like Im finished, and then left. So II really wanted to learn more aboutmy specialty area in AdolescentLiteracy and was really excited tolearn more about how to teachreading to all levels of my students.A masked Mrs. VanAllen scaring junior DustinHollingsworth awake.ran out and was like Hey. You finished?! I was reallyexcited for her, Elizabeth said.As strenuous as Mrs. VanAllens schedule could be, shealso was quick to note the support she received from herfamily while pursuing her masters. My husband has always been good athelping with things around the house. He does half the cooking normally, buthe really helped by picking up on fixingmeals and running errands, Mrs.VanAllen said. My kids have also beenreally patient with me and understoodthe whole idea that every night Id beeither sitting at the kitchen table or on the couch with alaptop doing assignments.Aside from the support shes received at home, she alsogained knowledge to apply to her classes at school.I really wanted to learn more about my specialty area inAdolescent Literacy and was excited to learn more abouthow to teach reading to all levels of my students, Mrs.VanAllen said. |
