Description: settingthestageBefore Sounds of Soufh members areready fo fake fhe sfage, fhey musfprepare for monfhs fo perfect fheirperformances. Each year, Souths welll-known musical program,Sounds of South, puts on amusical for South studentsand the community. Just asthe shows in years past havedrawn large crowds, thisyears production of Hello,Dolly! was no exception. While the audience got towitness the perfected finalproduct, the hard work andrehearsals that went into theproduction of the show oftenwent unseen.Cast members, forexample, studied theircharacters for months, whileparents and volunteershelped them make costumesand build sets. Each memberhad their own individualprocess for getting intocharacter, but many usedsimilar techniques such asstudying the role by watchingthe performances of others, practicing lines and singingthe songs. Senior Elijah Earlereflected on how preparedby singing his songs out loudover and over to see whatsounded right, and workingoff his cast mates to make(their) own styles that wouldflow together. Similarly, juniorMeghan May said sheprepared for her role asErnestina Money by usingPanther Plus time to meetwith other members of hercast and work on memorizinglines until she was able togo through each scenewithout having to look at (her)script. While each Sounds ofSouth member learned theirlines, they were alsoresponsible for helping theparents and volunteers maketheir costumes and build setsfor the show. To ensure thateverything would be finishedfor their first show in October,SOS members started workingon making their costumes asearly as the winter break ofthe previous school year. Mayshared that SOS membersbegan building sets for HelloDolly over the summer andcontinued through thebeginning of the school year, and that they also (tore)down the set as well after theshow (was) over.Though most students donot stop to think about howmuch work goes into Soundsof Souths performances eachyear, members of the groupexperience the preparationsfor months. After all of thehard work and time that eachindividual contributes, it is nowonder that the end result isalways an outstandingperformance.-Emily Long19Yefry TaakeAk
