The annual ballet The Nutracker, is a must see for many as it features the Jacobs School ofMusic orchestra along with many talented ballet dancers. In her eighth year of performing in TheNutcracker/ sophomore Garland Kelley took tothe stage to dance and bask in the light of thestage another time.Kelley played the role of a mouse officer, marching around the stage with bright redcheeks. The Nutcracker has become a part ofwhat I love to do, and ballet is a part of who Iam, Kelley said. This three-month productionwas very close to Kelleys heart, as she hadattended the show with her family for manyyears. Kelley was a part of the Indiana PreCollege Ballet Program which featured manySouth students and gave Bloomington youth asneak peak into the life of a Jacobs School ofMusic ballet program. The holiday-themed ballet was performedfor the fifty-seventh time at Indiana Universityin the famed Musical Arts Center. The balletfollows a young girl, Clara, with her nutcrackerdoll that comes alive, defeats obstacles such asthe Mouse King, and eventually leads her to amagical kingdom with other nutcrackers. Theshow is a wonder of colorful and candy-filledAdaPLworlds, appealing to little kids and adults.Freshman Chloe Zumbrun was alsoinfluenced by The Nutcracker, as theproduction contributed to her continuousenthusiasm for ballet. Passionate about dancingsince her childhood, Zumbrun joined the IU pre-college ballet program at age nine. She was ableto participate in The Nutcracker for only twoyears due to a sprained ankle. In this yearsproduction, she played a party boy in theChristmas party scene. The Nutcracker is sucha wonderful opportunity for any aspiringdancer, Zumbrun said. The pre-college ballet students practice sixdays a week, for nearly 15-20 hours a week - anincredibly demanding schedule. The hours aresimilar to those of college students who are apart of the ballet program. The Nutcracker wasa culmination of months of hard work, sweat, and tears, but for Kelley and Zumbrun, theexperience of participating in such an iconicevent was unforgettable.-SHAHZADI UPADHYAYm |
