Even after losing multiple key seniors last year, the rising underclassmen werecapable of making a deep post-season run.The drive for success brought aboutThe team clearly was capable of adapting to new challengesthroughout the season and took on a new formation. They elected two team captains, juniors JohnBannec and Jason Cherry. It was an unexpected honor, Bannec said. I was glad to accept the role. With key victories over cross-town rival Bloomington High School North and conference opponentTerre Haute North High School, the team powered through their regular season. Due to the help ofsenior goalkeeper Ryan Yohn s penalty kick saving skills, the Panthers had a multitude of closevictories in overtime. I just wanted to help the team out in any way I could as the goalie, Yohn said.Along with Yohns goalkeeping skills, another key component of the teams success was seniorWilliam Moores clutch goal scoring methods. If being second in the conference in goals scoredwasnt enough, Moore scored the crucial goal against North to seal the deal in sectionals. I enjoyedthe opportunities to score goals this year, but I wouldnt have been able to do it without a solid teamaround me, Moore said. Goal scoring and saves might be stand out stats, but it takes a team effort towin consecutive matches like the boys soccer team did this season. It didnt take long for the Panthersto rack up five home victories and multiple away wins; however, none of this could have been donewithout the Panthers deep bench. The boys showed the urge to win, and they accomplished great feats with a 12-3 regular seasonrecord and the second regional title and semi state appearance in the last two years.-CAMERON MCCLAINEl____^_t>38 ^ |
