Description: SWINGING TO COLLEGEFor student athletes, committing to acollege sport is an enormousaccomplishment. Senior Robert Van Peltand junior Alexander Franklincommitted to play Indiana Universitybaseball during their time in college.Van Pelt said, I committed therebecause the school is close to home,[has] great facilities, and is respectedacademically. Indiana Universitybaseball is a Division I (D-I) league andis incredibly difficult to get into. In the2017 season, the team had a record of29-19-2, a solid performance. Franklinand Van Pelt worked incredibly hardduring time at South in order tocompete to this level, and both areincredibly excited to begin theirI respective seasons on the team.DEDICATIONVarsity players discusssecret to their success.Baseball has long been defined as Americas favoritepastime. Especially in the midwest, baseball is one ofthe most popular sports in high schools across Indiana.Although it may not live up to the popularity of a fallsport like football, the talent and work ethic iscomparatively at the same level, if not higher. Playersfrom the baseball team confirm that their off seasonworkload and overall number of practices definitelyhelp them be prepared for the crammed schedule thatthe peak of the baseball season demands. It is commonly held knowledge by the team thatCoach Kiuesner and the other coaches on staff meanbusiness when the season kicks off and before itbegins. Baseball players are defined by their work ethicand determination to improve. We all put in countlesshours to better our game during the off season withthe hope that it will pay off during the close games inthe regular season and our tournament run, SeniorBryce Looze said. The team usually goes so far as tosacrifice their spring break because they have to bepresent at the practices while they do not have school.Players do not achieve the talent of players likesenior Robert Vanpelt in the outfield, juniorAlexander Franklin at the pitching position, or seniorGage Rolen without giving a little extra attention todetail when going through practices, warm ups, games, and cool down exercises. We have beenworking and practicing since before Halloween. So,now when we have 4-5 games in a week, our hardwork really begins to pay off since we are used to thishigh intensity, senior Benjamin May said. Throughall of this, no matter the number of wins and losses,no matter the injuries that are bound to happen, nomatter an unlucky call or a bad game, the whole teamknows that they gave their all. A popular saying insports is that practice makes perfect. To the BHSSbaseball team, however, persistence, dedication, andeffort makes perfect.- CAMERON MCCLAINEBILL OREILLY IS FIRED 4/191 FORMER NFL PLAYER AARON HERNANDEZ HAS COMMITTED SUICIDE IN PRISON 4/191 Athletics 1137
