Thiscould not be more true for exchange student Katerina Najmanova. Katerina, or Kat, is a seniorwho moved to America over the summer from Kladno, a major city in the Czech Republic. She plays saxophone, oboe, and piano, and has participated in marching band, concert band, and jazz band since moving to Indiana. For Kat, Norths extensive band program has been life-changing,because its been an exceptional platform to make friends and adjustto life far away from home.In marching band, for the first time in my life I felt like Ibelonged somewhere, and I felt really accepted, said Kat.Everyone was really kind and supportive. I think I became moresociable and more confident in who I am as a person. And myEnglish improved too!Leading up to her move to the United States, Kat was worriedpeople wouldnt like her or that she wouldnt be good at band. Aftercoming here and getting involved in the band program, however, she made friends very quickly and realized there was no reason toworry. When youre here at North as an exchange student, people want to talk to you and knowabout your country, said Kat. My band friends always support what Im doing and theyrereally fun and nice and understanding.Deciding to live in America for a year was a hard decision to make, but its something Kathas been wanting to do for a long time. She wanted her time as a foreign exchange student tobe the best experience of her life, and, according to her, thats exactly what is has been thanksto the band program. It is the best thing in my life so far, said Kat. I dont know what I would be doing herewithout band, especially in the summer.photos by: Hannah Johnson & Jeremy SchneiderNSTRUMENTClarinet is the best band instrumentbecause it has such a beautiful soundwhen played right, and has one of thelargest ranges in octaves than any otherinstrument... also, I play it, so its gottabe great.QUINN COX JUNIOR CLARINET PLAYERTrumpets add something to an ensemblethat cant be replicated by any otherinstrument.
