In our community, people choose to give back byhelping out the less fortunate in any way they can. Some peopleshop for the Christmas Angel Tree program, while othersvolunteer at the soup kitchen. Either way, many people findthat the true spirit of the holidays lies in compassion. It is inthis mindset that Mrs. Marlyss Coats freshman English classesvisited the Bloomington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center thisholiday season. The students crafted decorative boxes filledwith candy and positive messages written inside. On December15th, 2016 after school, students delivered the boxes to thecenters patients.Freshman Maya Mills gave another unexpected gift:music. Mills said that she was kind of nervous at first, sinceshe didnt know the people there, but the room soon warmedup to her. A lot of the people there enjoyed it, so I playedthe piano for the majority of the time. Mills performed songssuch as Fur Elise, Pachelbels Canon and The TurkishMarch on the piano.Coats students were not required to attend the field trip;all of the students who participated volunteered their own timeto do so. Its a nice thing to do, said freshmen MoraMaclaughlin. The freshmen enjoyed chatting with the residentsof the nursing home and, in some cases, making their holidayseason a bit brighter. Freshman Hannah Odom said the reasonshe wanted to go was because it gets really lonely aroundChristmas, and I wanted to make them happy.Whether it was music, art, laughter or company, MrsCoats freshman classes spread the holiday spirit through theirvisit to the nursing home. However, most of the students agreethat they also received a gift: seeing the residents faces light upat their presence was the ultimate reward.- NICOLE BROWNDIES AT 96 12/191A RUSSIAN MILITARY PLANE CRASHES INTO THE BLACK SEA, DISAPPEARING FROM RADAR 12/251 Academics 161
