NEWHEIGHTSIt was an exciting morning for the girls soccerteam as they all crammed their bags, uniforms,and pillows into a school bus preparing for thelong day ahead of them. They were traveling toPendleton Heights, where they would competeagainst three teams in a full day tournament.Although slightly nervous, the girls knewthat they were prepared. The saying practicemakes perfect was not disregarded by theathletes, especially because this seasonsworkouts were challenging due to poor fieldquality and injuries. Sophomore Riley Lukenssaid that the team practiced corner kicks, ballmovement, and being fluid as a team. Inaddition to these drills, the players ran laps andparticipated in a weight training classthroughout the spring. Players like Lukens andSophomore Jordan Monson train twice a week atForce Fitness. They work on cardio and strengthtraining at the gym. Lukens said, I go to Forcebecause it is a tremendous factor in my fitness,and she added, it helps me prepare for theintense season.The challenging atmosphere only helpedthe players be able to compete on the higherlevel. Senior Julia Wood said [the presence] oftalented underclassmen really push[ed] the olderAlthough the season provedchallenging, the girls soccer teamproved capable of the task.girls to work hard every day. The team as awhole focused on many aspect of the sport:techincal work, movemet, and fitness. By puttingin the work, the team was in prime condition toplay in the Pendleton Heights Tournament.The tournament was not an easy victory forthe group. Wood characterized the team as asecond-half team, meaning that they do notperform as well in the first half but succeed inthe second one. This tendency is incrediblynerve wracking for both the players and CoachIan Rickerby. Lukens said, It was intense everygamefeach half] was a battle. In the end, thegirls pulled through with a 2-1 victory againstPendleton Heights, which secured their overallwin. The tournament was a significant part of theteams season because the girls had a lot moreconfidence, Wood said.
