Description: Juniors Kaitlyn Tilford and Madeleine Allard warm up for the North-South football game, excited to be wearing their uniforms for thefirst time this season.A FOUR-YEAR MARCHstory by: Hannah JohnsonIts the much-anticipated North vs. South football game. The crowd is cheering, a footballis spiraling through the air, and excited students are packed together in the stands, cheering ontheir team. Energy is exploding inside Norths football stadium, but its not just coming from thefield or the student section. In fact, its largely coming from the band.Amongst the sea of maroon and black uniforms in the right section of the bleachers is asenior flute player, Gaia Hendrix-Petry. Shes talking excitedly with her flute section andwaiting to perform with the rest of the band in the halftime show. Tonight is one of many gamesthat shes played at in four years of participating in marching band.Marching generates a lot of amazing memories, according to Hendrix-Petry. Her favoritememory was when the band went to state finals for the first time in a long time last year.We all were struck with the euphoria that came with knowing that we had done it,Hendrix-Petry said. But more specifically we had done it together. The band qualified for stateagain this year and placed 5th, proving that its only beginning an uphill climb.Marching band is known for being extremely challenging and very time consuming;however, mostly everyone whos a part of it insists that its worth the commitment. Its just so rewarding to go to competitions and interact with other bands, Hendrix-Petrysaid.Even so, lots of students are apprehensive about joining. To those people, the advice of Senior Gaia Hendrix-Petry watchessomeone who has marched for four years is rock solid: If youre on the fence just join. You from the stands at the North/Southwont regret it, I promise. football game, counting down theclock until the halftime marching bandperformance.photo credits: Hannah Johnson48
