oah MarksEthan HamiltonAs the seniors filed out onto Assembly Hall, shrouded in purple from head to toe, questions swirled around inside their graduation-capped heads. What was next for them? What would they miss when they left Bloomington South behind - or would they missanything at all? And most importantly, would they trip walking across the stage? For senior Christopher Leonard, the experiencewas a strange one, complete with a few contemplations of his own. Part of me was thinking that it was similar to Panther Plus Awardsor to kindergarten graduation, Leonard said, but another part of me was trying to wrap my head around the fact that this was goingto be the last time I could consider myself a MCCSC student. For the last twelve years of my life, that was a pretty big part of myidentity, and even though Im still a student, and Ill still be in Bloomington because Im going to Indiana University, its different.Senior year was dominated by this general feeling — the awareness that drastic change was bubbling under the surface. It started onthe first day of school, when the class of 2014 first ambled down the halls of South as seniors, walking taller than ever before, andwas amplified throughout the year. Seniors set athletic and academic records, took on more and more AP classes, spent months oncollege applications and even more months in agony, waiting to hear back. At Commencement on May 31, this momentum hit itspeak. The culmination of four long and difficult years, Commencement was a time of reflection — especially when Principal MarkFletcher uttered those fateful words for the last time: Have pride in yourself, and the Panthers. I think the most important thing Ilearned at South was how to have pride in myself, Leonard said. As corny as that sounds, freshman year I was pretty insecure aboutmost things. However after hearing the phrase Have pride in yourself, and the Panthers so many times, I just figured why not? andstopped really caring about what other people thought of me, and Ive been happier since ^m iJ^filiiMIMMllM——■^Mthis one are what South seniors wili=carry with them beyond the walls of South, to wherevertheir futures may take them. |
