ALL IT TAKES IS A MOMENT. One small expanse of time, in which everything aligns - the chaoticscrambling of 24 high-schoolers subsides, experienced eyes scan the creek for signs of life, and a luckyglance alights upon a movement. And then the action starts. Senior Zachary Truelock acted on thisdiscovery without hesitation, reaching into the clear water of the creek to scoop out a crawdad. As he heldup his find to those crowded around the riverbank, his curious classmates shared in his delight. Momentssuch as these were frequent and familiar for Truelock, who became infamous in his fourth period APEnvironmental Science class for finding — and more importantly, holding — a variety of creek-dwellingcreatures during the class field trips to Clear Creek. In addition to crawdads, Truelocks impromptu show-and-tells included several frogs and Midland Water Snakes. Though the students were there primarily tocollect information about water quality, it was finds such these that best engaged the class. Years ofexploring and photographing nature had helped Truelock develop this comfort with wildlife. When he wasyounger, Truelock read field guides for fun and played in the creek near his elementary school — and now asenior, his fondness for nature remained strong. I like being out in nature, away from people, he said. Itscalming. His love of nature fostered a fierce passion for protecting it. A lot of animals ... are really sensitiveto environmental changes, he explained. They are the canary in the coal mine. He planned to continueexploring, and possibly pursue a degree in wildlife biology. Like Truelock, many Bloomington South studentswere eager to develop his or her own unique interest into something bigger. While the school dayscontinued and the pressure intensified, this passion set the student body in motion. Yet most often, those smallbut special moments were what truly mattered — a glimpse of a snake beneath the limestone rocks, the lastscrambled sentence in a timed writing, the sound of basketball as ft slides through the basket, or a gasp asthe final senior executive reveals the Dance Marathon fundraising total. So, South, while you keep movingand growing, remember to stop once in a while and CAPTURE THE MOMENT. |
