Description: sentlalsBloomington South students share their prom night essentialsJIVII/May 5 was aday belovedby seniors andfeared by theschool staff:BloomingtonHigh SchoolSouthsunofficialSenior SkipDay.Empty halls; quiet classrooms; cafeteriaseats unusually vacant; a good quarterof Bloomington High School Southsstudent population missing, making itone of the most poorly attended daysof the year. This was the case on May 5,Souths unofficial (and unsanctioned)Senior Skip Day. Traditionally held theMonday after prom, the day is meantto give seniors a deserving day off anda nice long weekend to recover fromfestivities. This year it fell convenientlybefore Election day, a day all MCCSCstudents received off, which gave theseniors who chose to skip a rarelyheard of - and highly coveted — four-day weekend. Many seniors took advantage ofthe time off, though for varyingreasons. Senior Erin Fitzgibbonsadmitted it was convenient time tostudy for AP exams the following week.Studying was a solid option, shesaid, but she still made room for somefun activities. [Senior NicholasMartino] and I went thrift shopping, because we discovered it wassomething we both wanted to do buthad never done, she said. I reallyenjoyed it.Senior Pyoung-Hwa Han tookto the outdoors, visiting YellowwoodState Forest in Brown County withseniors Sarah Goy, DelaneyHalloran and Abigail Konerman. We climbed this one hill that lookedlike it had been badly photoshopped, she said, but added that all in all itwas a pretty productive day. While some seniors ventured out, others decided to take the time to catchup on some much-needed sleep andrelaxation from the comfort of theirhome. Senior Madeline Newquistrecounts that she slept for a decentten hours for the first time in weeks. Itwas an adventure. And seniorWendy Vencel shared similarsentiments. It was a nice break, andnothing is better than tea and moviesfor 12 hours straight, she said. But by Wednesday, the happytimes had ended, and it was back tothe daily grind. Hallways once againcrammed and the cafeteria packed, seniors returned to finish out their lastthree weeks of high school without anyofficial (or unofficial) breaks. After arefueling day off, they were rested, prepared, and raring to go - ready topower through the remainder of theirfinal year.- BRYNN PARKINSON
