From history-making pole vault to the hurdles to the throws andbeyond, the team was successful in every event they were in.throws to sprints to the 1600 meterrun. Senior Kyle Burks, who will walk-on to the Indiana University track andcross country teams next year, wasready to take on the State meet in the1600: Last year was disappointing,so Im excited to run [at the Statemeet]. Burks went on to finish 22nd inthe state, no small feat at all.Junior Danny Thomas, a hurdlerand no stranger to competition, alsoadvanced to the State meet and ranhis heart out. Thomas has another yearof running though, and revealed thatit will be hard, but Im ready to be asenior leader on the team. Thomashelped the team tie for the Sectionaltitle with Bloomington North.Through thick and thin the boysran, jumped or threw. They knew everypoint mattered no matter the meet andthat, when it came down to the wire,they had to give it their all. And give ittheir all they did.For a split second, they are in the air.Fans raise their heads to follow theirpath. Like birds they soar, and thencome down, landing on the mat. Forthe fans, this is grace in motion. For thehigh jumpers and pole vaulters, this issecond nature.Senior Alexander Olson andjunior Deakin Volz may have onlybeen two athletes on the team, but theywere the most airborne. Olson, whowill be attending West Point Academynext year, used his height as anadvantage to high jump into the Statemeet and placed third. I workedpretty hard this year and had lots oftraining, said the medalist. Volzworked just as hard, setting the polevault State record at a high-flying171/2 and placing first in the State.Volz will have another year to fly evenhigher than this past season, and inpole vault, only the sky is the limit.The other members of the trackteam team also enjoyed success, fromthats RANK[ed]Competing withthousands of highschool track athletes,being ranked in thestate in an event isno easy feat.
