TheatreSouth was in the midst of a dressrehearsal of Charleys Aunt, and withthe real performance only days away,Rademacher should have been stressed. This was her class, after all. Would thecast and crew be prepared? Would thecostumes hold up? Would the lightingsystem work? But not this year. This wasntRademachers performance; CharleysAunt was directed and preparedentirely by May. This was a true studentproduction.Ive directed small things in class alot, explained May, a four-year memberof Theatre South. I always learned a lotfrom doing it, so I wanted to try directingfull scale. It all started during Mays freshmanyear, when then-senior Anna Biancodirected a performance of A GoodDoctor. After directing many smallperformances in class, May felt he wasready for the challenge of a full-scaleproduction.For many, the transition fromRademacher to May as director was alittle unusual at first. It was a little weird, I guess, totake so much direction from someonewho was the same age as us, admittedCourtney Mitzel, the only senior in theplay, but Devin was never bossy orunreasonable. It always felt like we wereall on the same team.As the cast became closer, withfreshmen and seniors alike mingling andfinding their own creative niche - juniorNathaniel Kohlmeier, for example, always did this hilarious pug dogimpression that got everyone in greatspirits, said Mitzel - practices becameeasier andRademacher should have beenstressed. But with May and the rest of thecast, she knew the play was in capablehands.-JAMES TANFORD
