Bloomington High School South, The Gothic, 2014, Page 42

Description: gaininIMOjmentuAt the beginning of the season — with sixnew coaches, a 4-26 record the previousthree years and already one player outwith a torn ACL - the Bloomington Southfootball team had a lot on its plate, as theplayers tried to take a step forwardinstead of falling behind. From anoutsiders perspective, it would appearas though the season would be hopeless. However, what such an outsider neededto take into account is that some of thebest coaches and one of the most resilientfootball programs around reside atSouth. The season consisted of manyveterans and newcomers stepping up,including lone freshman ThomasRichardson who did amazingly as avarsity player. His starting position, however, was not just handed to him. Justlike many of his teammates, Richardsonfought for his spot and took theopportunity to play under the Friday nightlights when it arose. When asked how itfelt being the only freshman on the roster,Richardson joked about being the last inlines at team dinners. He then becameserious and added, It was an honor.Considering the unheard of threeACL injuries in one season taking outjunior Tyson Cappy, junior TabinBreedlove and senior Ramonee Bruce, there were many opportunities forunderclassmen to step up. One of themore surprising things was how healthythe offensive line stayed throughout theseason, most likely because they werehanding out the beat-downs and nottaking any. Coach Mo Moriarity madethe offensive line the heart and soul of thenew-and-improved South offense. Theseniors might not have ended the seasonin the way that they wanted to, but theyset the foundation for the revived Pantherprogram. The line and team progressedimmensely as the season went on. Juniorquarterback Bryce Stancombeapproved of the many changes that wenton during the season and into the offseason: Im learning something newevery day.The season had its ups and downs, but the comeback 55-22 blowout ofMartinsville High School in sectionalsdefinitely made a statement. With thatwin it can be seen that the Panthers arebringing back the winning tradition thatmade them great years ago. Whenasked about the goals for next year,Stancombe echoed the thoughts of allreturning players with his response: WinState.-ZACHARY PEDERSENIn order to exceed expectations, the football team gota new coach and a new attitude.\/C While all football players work hard, some are more recognizedfor their achievements than others. The football team voted foreach category, and these are the winners.HARDEST WORKER ROOKIE OF THE YEAR1 st place: seniors DakotaThacker and Jonathon Miller2nd place: senior Ramonee Bruce1 st place: freshman ThomasRichardson2nd place: sophomore Zachary PedersenMOST LIKELY TOPLAY IN THE NFL1st place: junior TabinBreedlove2nd place: senior Elijah Eads
