Description: season encouragingThe 1976 Panther football team,under the direction of first-year coachTed Huber, finished the season with a6-4 record.We won three more ball gamesthan most people thought we would,Coach Huber said. We worked hard,and it paid off.The Panthers started off the seasonin fine fashion. South whipped theNorth Cougars 20-13 to take a 3-2lead in the city series.South next faced North Central;and this formidable opponent, led byAl Darings five touchdowns, routedthe Panthers 40-6. South regroupedand defeated New Albany 34-9.Mark Schutte, Scott Leisz, and GaryWalls all scored TDs in the third quarter as the Panthers upped their recordto 2-1.South opened South Central Conference play at Jeffersonville, wherethe Red Devils blanked the Panthers31-0. But in the next game, Southquickly turned things around bydefeating Franklin 36-14. The Panthers biggest headache of the seasonturned out to be arch-rival Martinsville. The Artesians scored twice in thefirst quarter and won 14-7. This wasthe first of two wins Martinsville hadover the Panthers during the season.South hit a five-year high in totalyardage. Greg Evans, Richard Hurt,Mike May, Schutte, and Kevin Saunders all scored as the Panthers hittheir peak.Post-season honors rolled in for thePanthers. Evans, Jay True, and SteveSmiley were first-team all-SCC picks;Walls and Saunders garnered honorable mention.
