Traveling 1,600 miles may sound exhausting, but a few Bloomington High School Southstudents went the distance this summer - bybicycle.Of the long, difficult journey from KeyWest, Florida back home to Bloomington withdeCycles, a group of avid cyclists, sophomoreDiana-Claire Henderson said theexperience was a great way to get in touchwith yourself. It teaches you a lot of goodthings, such as interacting with other people.Although the trip was physically exhaustingand required a year of training, Hendersonacknowledged the experience also helped herdevelop a good, clear mind.Preparing for the trek was no easy task.Sophomore Madeline Elkins said she didlots and lots of training ... about 1,048 milesto prepare for the trip. The deCycles groupfacilitated training sessions all participantswere invited to attend, but many dedicatedcountless hours devoted to personal training. The practice rides and (my) rugby games112 STUDENT LIFEinterfered a lot, so I would have to go out andbike on my own, Henderson said.Junior Maggie Kennedy overlooked theexhaustive biking to focus on the bigger picture. This trip taught me to be strong, never give up,and find confidence somehow, Kennedy said.It taught me to have a good attitude and how itcan affect others. I was taught there is beauty inall things, no matter how small.Henderson agreed. Of the 14 major citiescycled through, she said her favorite of thestops was probably Gatlinburg, because of themountains. Although she knew that the terrainworld make for a difficult ride, the beauty of thelandscape made up for any hardships. Othermajor cities on the trek included Miami,Charleston, Gatlinburg, Lexington and Louisville. The group traveled north across regions andstates and despite the days and tires exhaustedin the process, one thing was clear - the cyclistslearned about the vast expanse of this countryand even more about themselves.-BAILEY BOLER>getOUTSouth students exploredand adventured thissummer.
