Seniors hadgraduated, and a young team felt the heat ofcompetition breathing into every calculatedmove on the field. The odds seemed to bestacked against the Bloomington High SchoolSouth girls soccer team.The new starting lineup quicklyestablished a groove - and it seemed to work.The team came out on top over cross-townrival Bloomington High School North twicethis season: once in the regular season andanother in Sectionals. Junior Madylin Smithdescribed the Sectional win as a weightbeing lifted from [their] shoulders. The gameagainst North was by far the most intensegames of the season. The game was tied 0-0before North scored a goal, but senior JuliaHerrmann came through for the Pantherswith a penalty kick. This goal gave the teamthe momentum to continue to persist withtheir tough defense and to take control of thegame.Senior Victoria Fosha sealed the\headinpgame with the teams final goal, locking in aSectionals victory. The team played BedfordNorth Lawrence High School in the Sectionalfinals and secured their title as reigningSectional champions with a 1-0 win.Due to the win of the Sectional title lastyear, expectations were high for this youthfulteam. Coach Ian Rickerby said his team didexactly what the coaches expected at the startof the year: win our sectional, and if not win,then go down fighting in the Regional semis.The Lady Panthers fought their East CentralHigh School opponents with vigor and valorand ultimately lost the game in a shootoutscore of 1-0.The Bloomington South girls soccerteam has high goals for the future, with apromising and talented group ofunderclassmen.
