Description:	Snowfallsclose schooleight daysAfter returning from a two-weekChristmas vacation, BloomingtonSouth students enjoyed a differentkind of vacation—snow days.The Monroe County CommunitySchool Corp. found it necessary toclose schools for eight days. ForBloomington North it was 14 daysbecause of inadequate fuel supplies.Bloomington was surrounded bymore than a foot of snow, even higherin many drifts. Temperatures droppedbelow zero, and safety precautionswere advised to prevent frostbite. Thecold weather also brought frozenwater pipes, and people were told tokeep water faucets running.Heavy snowfall and blizzard warnings caused many community activities to be cancelled, including severalSouth athletic events. Most stores hadto cut hours, and for a two-weekperiod the College Mall merchantsclosed at 7 p.m. instead of 9 to savefuel.Despite the cold weather PresidentJimmy Carter was inaugurated Jan.20, 1977. A few weeks later, in hisfirst nationally televised speech asPresident, Carter discussed energyconservation procedures, dressed in aheavy sweater and seated by a fireplace.A: The South tennis courts had an abandoned look during the winterseason. B: Sub-zero weather confused thebank thermometers. C: Cold weather andsnow delayed school arrival for manystudents. D: One reason for school cancellations was the high drifts blocking roads.E: Hooded coats, mufflers, mittens, andsnowboots were popular fashions for the winter of 76-77. F: Melting snow turned to ice,making driving hazardous. G: Many peoplefound it much easier and safer to keep theircars parked.
