Several Bloomington South students sought employmentunder the sun, working as lifeguards at Bryan Park Pool. When senior Lacy Adamsprepared to go in to work, shestrayed from the usual routine. Shedid not don the familiar t-shirt andpants of a salesperson or waitress.Instead, she opted for somethingmore minimalistic: a simple cherry-red bathing suit, bearing one word:lifeguard.Bloomington Parks andRecreation employed severalcertified Bloomington South studentsas lifeguards at Bryan Park Pool. The beloved Bloomington locationnot only provided locals with aplace to swim, but also allowedthese teenagers to exercise theirleadership skills in a line of workthat required diligence andattentiveness. While any summer job offeredstudents valuable experience, lifeguarding provided knowledgeunlike any other: how to look afterand protect the lives of others. What makes my job different is thateverything I do and say is for thesafety and protection of others, saidsenior Lacy Adams. There arereasons behind the rules we enforceand those are to protect people andthe facility. Its a job where we haveto be constantly attentive and alert.Sophomore SavannahOldham, a first year lifeguard, wasexcited to begin her employment atBryan Park in the summer. ForOldham, the choice was a personalone. My whole family is some wayinvolved with public safety, so I amjust following in their footsteps anddoing what I can when only being16, Oldham said.A veteran lifeguard, Adamswas more practical with her jobselection, considering lifeguardingsunique advantages. I wanted ajob where I could spend mysummers outside and be aroundpeople, Adams said. The job required extensivetraining prior to hiring. Oldham andAdams were both lifeguardcertified in the one-trimester-longBloomington South lifeguardingclass. In order to become alifeguard, they had to take aswimming class and pass RedCross CPR and lifeguardingcourses with minimal error. The gravity of their job put alot of pressure on the studentlifeguards. It makes you do yourbest because if you mess up its notjust you messing up - you arepotentially hurting someone else orputting someone elses life indanger, Adams said. This was a big responsibility, but the students were ready toaccept it. As Adams said, weknew that when we applied.- HAILEY JACKSON AND EMILY MOONAn avid craft-maker, junior Taylor Jackson demonstrates how to make apair of cut-off jeans inspired by the social networking site Pinterest.First buy a pair of jeans from arnrift shop [mine are from Vintage*°gue] or just use an old pairNext cut them to the length that Now you can design them withyou want.
