around the world intJrjR IWJunior Advisory Board took Bloomington South students on atour of the world for the 2013 Prom, One world. One night. When junior Minhwa Choientered the atrium on the eveningof May 1 1, she was not greeted bythe familiar limestone walls andmarbled staircases that marked theentrance to Bloomington South.Instead, she was transported tolively, colorful locations around theworld—Dubai, Cairo and Paris, toname a few.For Choi and the otherattendees of the Bloomington SouthProm, the high school wassuccessfully transformed into a hubof international culture thatcombined aspects of five differentcountries for the 2013 theme,One world. One night. When Ientered, I couldnt believe I was atschool, Choi said. I gotgoosebumps. As treasurer of JuniorAdvisory Board (JAB), Choiexperienced a greater shock thanmost in her first glance at thecompleted prom decor. Beginningbuilding in April, the members ofJAB stayed after school toorganize, plan, and create thelavish scenes that would adorn theatrium. The hours spent constructingthe massive decorations, includinga windmill and giant EgyptianPharaoh, gave Choi a newappreciation for the finishedproduct. It makes me appreciatethe details, Choi said.Choi found personalsatisfaction in the process ofassembling kits. I thought it wasfun, Choi said. You could comeand build and see how much itdeveloped week by week, and itwas your work. The long procedure ofplanning prom began in January, when JAB members selected thetheme from ten other possibleideas. We combined a lot ofthemes into one, said juniorIsabelle Conrad, president of JAB.The idea to take inspirationfrom several cultures for anaround the world theme offeredopportunities for a wide variety ofdecorations. It gave us a lot morecreative freedom, Conrad said.According to Conrad, the themetranslated easily into decor. Wehad enough going on, Conradsaid. While the prom was a livelyexperience for all students, it wasparticularly powerful for JABmembers. You saw the piecescoming together, said junior andJAB member Jonathon Miller. When the lights went off, thestudents arrived, and the 2013prom began, its creators werefinally satisfied, Miller said. It wasjust like you imagined it.. |
