It wasthe Lady Panthers first home tennismatch against Bedford NorthLawrence. Sophomore TaylorThomas stood at the ready,waiting for her opponent to servethe ball.Thomas won the first set. Sheneeded one last set to take homethe match. The tension was thick.Though Thomas was a talentedplayer, she had more than a fewobstacles to overcome before shecould bring in a win.Im still learning how to playsingles, explained Thomas.Without a partner to lean on, Ittakes a lot of concentration. Tokeep her focus, Thomas tried toblock everything out. Focusingonly on her opponent and the ball,she began the match.Her obstacles did not endthere. It seemed as though perhapsher largest challenge stemmed fromthe unpredictable spring weather.On a breezy day in early April,You have to pay attention to winddirection, she explained.It was an intense game, and itseemed at times as if this LadyPanther might go home emptyhanded. However, her teammatesnever lost hope, cheering her on allthe way. They were proud of theirfellow Lady Panther as she workedto rise above her challenges.Taylor handled the pressurewell, and she was able to come tothe top and win against heropponent, said fellow tennisplayer sophomore LisaGabrielsen.In the end, despite somemoments that kept the crowd on theedge of their seats, Thomas cameback to win it all. I was reallyrelieved, admitted Thomas.
