As winter slowly loosened its grip,Bloomington South studentsawaited solace from the cold intheir spring breaks. Many lookedforward to spring break as a meansto escape from school, but somechose to use their break to helpothers in the Dominican Republic.Among those students wereunior Madyson Keller andsophomore Jacob Milhouse, whoembarked upon a weeklongmission trip in Hato Del Yaque with40 other high schooler students.Another group of South studentswent to the same area with adifferent party, but experienced aargely similar trip.The trek to the DominicanRepublic from Bloomington was along one. Both groups spent overeight hours on planes and anadditional four hours in busses.Milhouse described the longjourney as agonizing but fun, ashe became acquainted with hisgroup. When Milhouses groupreached Santa Domingo after theirsecond flight, they were greeted byfamiliar faces as they encountered\Jrthe second group, which wasstopping at the same airport.Milhouse explained that his groupstrip was technically throughSherwood Oaks, but members ofother churches went too. Thesecond troop was able to go to theDominican Republic through asimilar program supported bySouth.Upon Milhouses arrival, hisgroup was greeted by a horde oflocal children. Once the groupswere settled, they got down tobusiness volunteering in the localvillage of Hato Del Yaque. Mygroup helped out at the nutritionalcenter, serving the kids food, saidMillhouse. Meanwhile, Kellerbroke up rocks with mallets for aconstruction project, said Keller.After a week of hard work,leaving was difficult for both Kellerand Milhouse, who had grownfond of their work in the DominicanRepublic.
