Bloomington South theater students got a chanceown plays for the Bloomington Playwrights ProjectBloomington Souths AdvancedActing class had double the workas they prepared to perform playswritten and directed by theirclassmates. Three of these playswon the Bloomington PlaywrightsProjects Miniplay Contest, whichencouraged students from grades3-12 to submit short works usingnewspaper headlines forinspiration, with the winning playsto be performed for the public.The plays were originallywritten as a final project inAdvanced Acting, said sophomoreHolly Barnhart. But [the class]decided to submit them to the BPPsMiniPlay Contest to see how thefor the high school category of thecontest ended up being Southstudents. The winning plays, titledTales from Hurricane Sandy, TheHighlanders, and Fearless Man,won first, second and third place,respectively.Students rehearsed every dayin the month leading up to theperformances. Directors selectedactors and everyone in the classwas able to participate. For seniorGabriela Fagen, who appearedin Fearless Man, It was nice to bea part of a student drivenproduction where everyone hadtheir own input. When February22 came around, excitement[ite, direct and act in their[iplay Contest.| among the students as theyprepared to show their plays to thepublic. It was very easy to convey[emotions to the audience in the BPP[ setting, said Fagen.I had never done anything| like this before, and it was just sofun to be up on that stage, said[ sophomore Jessica McCormack.For senior Jake Babcock,[who wrote, directed and acted ini his play The Highlanders, thecontest result was surprising.
