Public parks. Busy roads, and secluded sidewalks. As the cityexpanded to larger limits, deer took upresidence throughoufrrTerowrt^eaaingro^a dangerous case of overpopulation. The doe-eyed image of Bambidetracted from the harsh reality of deeroverpopulation, which caused seriousenvironmental and safety hazards. Lackingan appropriate food supply, deer had toscavenge, leading to food shortages forother wild animals. With the addedpressures of construction and newdevelopment destroying local woods, thedeer had been forced into residential andcommercial areas of Bloomington. This overlap of stomping groundswas dangerous for both deer and humans.Along highways and city streets, deerposed a major threat to motorists and theirvehicles. The City Council of MonroeCounty proposed possible solutions, including birth control, snares, introductionof new predators, and an extension of thehunting season, but none met withapproval. The debate was on to find asolution amenable to both parties.Sophomore Lauren Hendersonstrongly disagreed with the proposedsolutions, regarding them as animalcruelty. They need to seriously considerother options said Henderson. Sheopposed any plan that might hurt the deer, instead recommending humane methodsof birth control. On the other hand, senior JaymsChandler, an avid hunter, considereddeer to be pests who put both people andtheir livelihoods at risk. Chandlersupported a lengthened hunting season, but opposed the introduction of newpredators not native to Bloomington, stating that [we] shouldnt mess withMother Nature. As Chandler pointedout, the impact of any action on the rest ofthe ecosystem must be taken into account.Opinions on how to handle theoverpopulation of deer in Bloomingtonvaried widely, but all seemed to agree onone major point: the problem must besolved as quickly and safely as possible.-CHRISTINA ELLIOT |
