Description: Scanning the Large Group Roomduring the biannual BloomingtonSouth National Honor Society(NHS) Blood Drive on October22, the looks on the faces of thestudents, faculty and staff rangedfrom terror to squeamishness totranquility. However, the donorspushed through any potentialdiscomfort with the image ofhelping people, whether they beclose friends or faceless strangers,sharp in their minds.Junior Daniela Vidaurri-Rodriguez saw her brother, seniorCarlos Vidaurri-Rodriguez, inserious need of blood during hiscancer treatments. She vividlyremembered his struggles as shelay down. I was a little nervous atfirst, but there was no hesitationwhen I remembered how much heneeded it, she said. Daniela feltsomewhat queasy while her bloodwas being drawn, but the prospectof helping people like her brothercalmed her nerves.While others did not havesuch a personal connection, theexperience remained paramountStudents participate in thebiannual blood drive sponsoredby the National Honor Society.to the donors. It is very important tothink about not only ourselves, butothers too. Giving blood is a greatopportunity to do so, junior KirbyAnstead said. The possibility offainting almost stopped her fromdonating, but she felt a strong senseof duty.Some people, however, weredenied the opportunity to donateduring the blood drive, includingsenior Mark Gonzales because ofhis previous shots. Gonzalesattempted to volunteer, but he wasturned down repeatedly. I wasreally anticipating giving blood, heremembered, but if I couldnt giveblood theres nothing I could havedone about it. He had donatedonce before and hoped to partakein another blood drive in the future.Those who participated in theevent gained personal satisfactionwhile contributing to a worthy cause.The event collected 80 pints ofblood in total, which were deliveredto The Red Cross.
