Running was atradition in Huggins family, as hisfather had participated in bothcross country and track at South.His mile time is better than mine,but I intend to beat his halfmarathon time, Huggins said. Hewas given an opportunity toaccomplish this goal when he ranthe Geist Half Marathon with hisfather.The Geist Half Marathon wasonly the beginning for Huggins. InAugust he planned to competewith his girlfriend and fellowsenior Kelly Gifford in theColumbus Triathlon Challenge inColumbus, Indiana. Gifford wasplanning on competing in the racewith her mother. She planned tocompete in an 800-yard swim, an18-mile bike ride and a five-kilometer run all in the same day.Gifford was inspired tocompete in the triathlon to stay inshape. Gifford said, I wasthinking about what Im going todo this summer, besides work...Ineed to do something to keep mein shape. All my swim coaches dotriathlons and theyre in greatshape, so the choice seemedobvious.Both of them entered theirevents hoping to beat theirparents, as well as each other.We see ourselves getting in a tie,because Im a better swimmer...but hes definitely got a longerstride than I do, Gifford said.Huggins didnt agree that therewould be a tie; he was confidentthat he could catch up and sprintpast [Gifford] during the fivekilometer.Despite the outcome of therace, both Huggins and Giffordadmitted that they would be happyjust to cross the finish line andaccomplish their goal ofcompeting in a triathlon.-JACKSON PHILLIPSThe race begijgroup of runnapsje#ve thestarting line at Hobiie Cancer. «OTO BY ELIFRANKScelebrated its 10th running.
