the life of aLOTS seniorEvery year there was something newto look forward to as students graduated through the levels of the MCCSCschool system. There were differentprojects, intriguing field trips, and morelengthy class trips that excited and energized elementary school students.Bradford Woods was no exception.Although one of the first thoughtsupon leaving Bradford Woods as afifth grader was usually, I want to bea LOTS senior! the experience wassomewhat different to those 17- and 18-year-olds. What was presented to thefifth grade boys and girls was a groupof cool Bloomington North and Southseniors, camping with BFFs, and having fun at all of the famous BradfordWoods activities like the line dance,Dutch auction and all-day hike. Theseniors on the trip had a somewhat different view.To a notoriously apathetic age bracket, this experience was a job and achance to try their hands at being anauthority. Senior Andrew Lairdshared this mind set. To the 18-year-old Laird, going to Bradford Woodswas like a brief employment or babysitting opportunity; he had signed upbecause he enjoyed working with kids, though he was in for a surprise. Ihave more of an understanding now.I didnt know how hard it would be,This year, some membersfrom the class of 2009 bravedthree days in the woodswith fifth graders fromaround Blooomington.you have to know what youre doing,Laird said.Even though seniors went to LOTStraining the summer prior to the trip, and those who lived in Bloomingtonas a fifth grader had gone once before, expectations could have been misleading. Senior Micah Nethery wassurprised when he was stationed in acabin alone with 24 boys, three-quarters of a mile into the woods. I didntknow Id have to yell that much. It wasalso weird having kids come to me asthe authority, Nethery said.In the end, fifth graders madegreat memories and gained new rolemodels.-MARGARET MCGILLIVRAYDAYbyDAY..Day One12:00 Unload bus, take things to cabins1:00 Lunch2:00 Trail groups4:00 Recreation5:00 Cabin break6:00 Dinner7:00 Alpha Wolf8:00-10:00 Campfire and Snack10:30 Lights outDay Two9:00 Breakfast10:004:00 All day hike4:00 Cabin break5:00 Recreation6:00 Dinner7:00-10:00 Dutch auction or square dance10:00 Snack and lights outDay Three9:00 Breakfast10:00-12:00 Trail group or rotations12:30 Bus leaves Bradford WoodsInformation from the St. Charles LOTS trip schedule.Seniors Tyler Henke and Reed McClureteach the campers the Cha Cha Slide. At one of the most well known BradfordWoods activities, senior Clara Maloneprepares her kids for the skits in the DutchAuction.A fifth grader grudginly sits in jail withsenior Julie Ghekas during a game ofCapture the Flag.Seniors Tyler Henke, Taylor Crousore andEleanor Birch acquaint themselves with thecampers. All photos by Jessica Arthurlots | COMMUNITY | 145 |
