your bloodsaves livesSouth students lined up on October 29, 200<to give their blood at the NHS Blood Drive. At any unexpected moment, bloodcould be needed in a time of great vulnerability. According to the AmericanRed Cross website, every two secondssomeone in America needs blood. When this moment arrives we expectblood to be there, but because barelya fraction of those who can give do,blood banks nationwide often facedshortages.Bloomington Souths National HonorSociety helped to make a differencein the community for over 20 yearsand helped to address blood shortages by holding two blood drives forthe American Red Cross each schoolyear. The pints of blood collected fromSouth students and teachers went to local hospitals.Volunteers from NHS helped out atthe blood drive by directing traffic andmaking sure no one collapsed onto theLarge Group Room floor. Senior NHSmember Kyle Bristol volunteeredat the event to help make a difference, because he could not trive blood. Imnot giving blood, because I have wrestling practice after school. If I didnt, Iwould probably give blood.Junior Jacob Chambers believedthat giving blood was part of his responsibility as a citizen. People shouldgive blood; its a very little expense toyou. The blood drive was open to allstudents and teachers 16 years of ageand older who weighed more than110 pounds. This was the first blooddrive that students as young as 16could donate. Sophomore ElizabethTapp would not have been eligible, ifthe minimum age limit had not beenchanged. I was excited the age limitchanged, so more people could giveblood, Tapp said, Its a chance tosave even more lives. At South, giving blood was a timelesstradition of generous people bound together by the caring nature of helpingneighbors.
