However, while a majority of the students werefamiliar with the SRT show, not nearlyas many were familiar with the MassMedia classes, and how much workthey put in behind the scenes. It takes at least six hours of work forthe SRT show, not including the segments that were filmed beforehand, junior Shawn Barger said, I havestayed after school for upwards of threeor four hours editing. You get lost init, you forget to look at the clock, andbefore you know it its six oclock.Their lofty tasks ranged from filming,to editing, to writing scripts for new segments. The Mass Media students had theirworkload lightened by four new arrivals courtesy of a grant for the program. At the beginning of the year, they got-four new iMac computers. The Macsgave the Mass Media students the opportunity to take their product to thenext level. For some, however, working with Apple software was quite achange. Its different, said freshmanKyle Vest, Its not easier, becausetheres more stuff to learn, but its better. You can get a lot more out of it, asfar as editing goes. However, the new equipment did notautomatically guarantee a good show, the students still had to learn interviewing skills, as well as camerawork andediting. Students learned the basics offilming, such as how to frame a shot, get it in focus, and various lighting techniques. Its a hands-on experience, said Barger, youre hardly ever sittingdown.Senior Christopher Hamiltonenjoyed his experience working onthe SRT show for the same reasons. Its probably one of the best classesat South because its completely handson. I like it because theres somethingfor everyone. You can be in front of thecamera, you can do the camerawork, ifyoure good with computers you canedit, or if youre a good writer you canhelp write the scripts.-NIKOLAJ KNAPOWSKIQ: How do you choose theanchor for the week?A: Everyone who wants tobe an anchor gets their namedrawn out of a box,—sophomore Stephanie Richardsbehind thescenesQ: How do you choose yourtopics for Into The Freying Pan?A: I hear other people complainabout things and I obviously havemy own pet peeves as well.—math teacher, Mr. Drew FrevQ: How do you come up with theideas for intro?A: People will throw out ideas, like Rhian had the idea for theBreakfast Club (themed intro),and if Mr. Kennedy likes it wecan use it,—junior Jennifer Piiians30 | ACADEMICS | the srt show and the optimist |
