thats the way thebeaker breaks-x1.Sophomore Lea Beneish shares her passion for science and jrv class. Not everyone grasped science. Yet,for Bloomington South sophomore LeaBeneish, science classes were important and exciting. Im the person wholikes science classes, she said. I loveit because its really interesting and explains how the world works.Beneish said that science experimentsare the best part of science classes. They help you learn the concepts, she said. Beneish pointed out thatMurphys Law, anything that can gowrong will go wrong, was correct. Iremember one time I was in chemistry and my partner and I had to boila liquid. My partner put in too muchof the liquid though and the stuff overheated. I walked away for a secondwhen suddenly I turned back aroundand saw the beaker just shatter into 100pieces and the liquid fell into the Bun-sen burner. It created a bright flame. When an experiment takes an unexpected turn, Beneish said that you stillcan learn from your mistakes. Youlearn what not to do first off. But also, you learn what happens if you do thatcertain thing, which helps you learnabout what youre working with.Despite Beneishs belief that studentscould and should learn from their mistakes, she said that they should try todo the experiments correctly and stilllearn without breaking equipment. Sheremembered the time in her physicsclass when her class put saltine crackers into liquid nitrogen then got to eatthem. That was fun, nothing wentwrong, but it looked cool because weall were smoking as the nitrogen cameout through our noses and mouths.Even so, Beneish felt the most memorable experiments were the ones inwhich something went wrong. Theyare the ones that really matter becauseif you mess up, you end up learning 10times what you would have.-CHANDI£R WAGGONERMs. Sabrina Grossman, a biology teacher andadviser for the award-winningScience Olympiad team, sharedthoughts about teachingscience.Q: What sparked your interest in becoming abiology teacher?A: I have always loved science and learningabout the human body.
