When I first came to South everyone asked me where I got my perm, butmy hair is just naturally this curly, explainedMcGillivray.^l-:Horning GloryBy Claire PruittStudents walk, ride or drive to school by the hundreds to prepare themselves forthe inevitable eight oclock bell, when they are to be in their seats and ready to learn. However, in that time between the screeching of the alarm clock and the ringing of thefirst bell, somehow students need to find ways of preparing themselves mentally andphysically for the six and a half hour school day ahead of them.I usually make it a point not to be in class before the one minute bell, seniorMatt Richardson said. Before that one minute bell rings, Richardson works out his pre-class angst in his car by shouting at traffic and saying mean things to stoplights whenthey stop [him].Getting ready for the day begins long before walking out the door. More oftenthan not, high school students rely on sheer mind power to get up in the morning, andare no stranger to the snooze button. I have to think about getting up for at least 20minutes before I can actually start moving, said sophomore Sara Alyward. Alyward feltthat the best way to start her day is by thinking positively. [I] wash my face, put someclothes on-have fun with it! she said. Then it is time for breakfast, be it cereal, eggs,or cookies out of a vending machine, before leaving home for the day.Once at school, students can be seen doing just about anything, from playinggames, to talking with friends, to hurriedly finishing homework from the night before,to catching up on some much needed sleep. I look forward to seeing my friends, butI dont until first period, and that makes me sad, explained sophomore Juliet Roberts.Others are not so optimistic after stepping off the bus. Many a dazed, half awake facecan be seen wandering through the halls before class. Eventually, everyone snaps outof it using their own unique tricks and rituals to get ready to learn until the last bell at2:30..fAcademics |
