Harden said that having the IU facilitators come to South will make them good teachers.A School Within A SchoolBy Anna ZaretProject PRIDE was created five years ago as a place for incoming freshmento learn in a smaller, more community-like environment. Students are identified bycounselors and teachers and chosen to be placed in Project PRIDE. PRIDE studentsspend their entire day, except for gym class or an elective, in two classrooms studyinga curriculum focused on mathematics, reading, and writing. After five years running ofthe program, the reactions of past students from Project PRIDE endorse and praise theteachers and classes for helping them make the transition into high school.Being in PRIDE freshman year was really helpful. Now Im doing much betterin my classes than I was before I was in the group, said junior Jack Ensley. Other pastPRIDE students also have a positive attitude towards the program, It was fun and easy.It really helped me get used to high school, junior Celeste Parker said.Freshman Project PRIDE students praise the small classes, one-on-one help,and variety in learning that they get from being in the group. Youre more focused onyour work and it makes it easier to learn, said freshman Jordan Scott. We also haveIU students come in and help us work. It helps to have lots of different people workingwith you on your homework, he added. Project PRIDEs school-within-a-schoolatmosphere has proved to be a valuable tool for the South students within the group. Itcontinues to make the high school experience more effective for every student who goesthrough the group.fofy^four Academics
