We have done wellin Western Walk Trot, WesternPleasure and won the Junior High PointAward in 2013, Hendricks said. Herthree horses, Sunnie, Jax, and Soxy, accompanied her to the fair. Sunniehas been in the family since the horsewas two years old, and Hendricks hasbeen the only rider Sunnie has known.Hendricks, an active member ofthe 4H Horse and Pony Club, beganher fair preparation in February. Duringfair week, her preparation lasted threehours each day. Hendricks, despite thestress associated with showing ananimal, enjoyed the atmosphere of thefair alongside her family and friends. My family and I usually watch theDemolition Derby and try all of thefood the fair has to offer, Hendrickssaid.Typically, Hendricks was not theonly South student to show heranimals at the fair. Fellow sophomoreCarmen LaBella looked forward to;showing her poultry (chickens, turkeysand ducks), but this year the chickenflu prevented her from doing so.LaBella, who has shown her birdssince she was in first grade, joined thefair as an attendee. She enjoyed sometraditional fair treats and submittedsome of her artwork to the eventLaBella especially enjoyed getting icecream at the fair because its a greatway to cool off when its so hot out.In addition to animals andartwork, Hendricks and LaBella foundthemselves surrounded by 4-Hprojects, competitions and go-kartraces. Always an important part ofMonroe County, and for manyBloomington South students, the fairwas a way to enjoy the richness ofsouthern Indiana food, culture andspirit.
