I didnt know I was enteredin the contest until I won, said Jackie Duemler of her art contest win. My teacher liked one of my recentpieces so she submitted it for me, but I didnt know! Duemlers main expertise is in photography but shehad experience in almost the whole art field, as many people do. Duemler participated in jewelry making, textiles, and stained glass at South, though photography was her favorite.Almost the same thing happened to senior Alex Bonk; his art teacher, Ms. Stacy Jennings, suggested that he enter the contest, which he had won the previous year. His favorite art classes, as well ashobbies outside of school, were photography and drawing, a couple of the most popular mediums of selfexpression. Bonk would not like to continue art professionally though. I will continue doing it in my freetime, said Bonk. However not everyone is competitive as an artist. Its an excellent emotional outlet, said freshman Katherine Waggoner of her 2-D art class. But this was not the case for everyone. Waggoner said,Slackers and troublemakers are often put in, or choose art class as a last resort. Waggoner, on the otherhand, signed up because she loved to draw. We were given a lot of freedom and we can do whatever wewant to do. We also paint every Friday in our composition notebook, said Waggoner. Her art will not stopafter her career at South. Id like to write and illustrate childrens books, she says about future plans. But does creativity have to be expressed on paper? Freshman Emily Deckard said that she wouldlike to pursue a career in textiles, also an art class offered here at South. For now, outside of the requiredpieces in class, Deckard also volunteered at Templeton Elementary as a role model in its art club. From ceramics to textiles, art is one of the best ways to let go on a stressful day. Its a good outletduring the day, when you feel you just need to be You. Whether you choose to take a picture of yourfavorite spot in Bloomington, make that necklace youve always invisioned but never found, or go crazy andthrow some paint on a canvas.foi%Qm Academics |
