Bloomington High School South, The Gothic, 2007, Page 195

Description: ounds of SouthStory by Lisa SmithGraduating and leaving Bloomington High School South was not easy for this yearsseniors, especially if the seniors had attached themselves to certain friends or activities. Forthe Sounds of South seniors, who had attached themselves to both, it was definitely hard toleave. As senior Timothy Fuson stated, Of course Ill miss all the times weve had together, especially all the originals that have been in the group since freshman year and are now seniors with me. Fuson along with the senior Claire Kruschke, had been in the group for fouryears, and had some great accomplishments to cherish forever. It is so rare to find a group so diverse and yet so dedicated and committed to eachother and to music, Kruschke said. As always with the annual musical, Sounds of Southmembers had started rehearsing and staging during the summer. However, this years musical, Pippin, was definitely one to remember. With elaborate, colorful costumes and twocasts, it was quite a production to put on. The show was very unique in that it was notset in a typical time period and did not follow the typical storyline, Kruschke said. Thecostumes reflect the chaos and strangeness of the show and provide a great background forpeople to get to know each other. The effort of putting the show on proved well worthit—a total of 1500 tickets were sold. After the musical, the choir had begun to prepare for competitions. Director Ms.Gwen Witten Upchurch said, they have gone to [the state competition] for 25... [a] greathonor. At State, they accomplished quite a feat, placing seventh.Kruschke was ecstatic about this placement. I think our placement at ISSMA (Indiana State School Music Association) State this year was a huge validation of all the hard workwe put into Sounds of South, she said.To finish off the year, Sounds of South had their annual Finale, a time for individualmembers to display their talents and sing in duets or solos. Along with the constant applause, however, came some tears. The seniors were leaving, so the group was to be brokenup. The group has been amazing this year.. .one of my best groups ever as far as attitudeand work ethic, Upchurch said.Kruschke summed up the feelings of the Sounds of South seniors about their future:I cant imagine not being able to sing my favorite songs with my best friends every day!Sounds of South makes a deep impression on its members, and I truly feel like a hole will beleft in me when I leave its ranks.Above: Sophomore Carrie Vandoren performsin the musical Pippin. All members of Soundsof South were required to attend a camp insummer to start preliminary rehearsals for themusical.Above: Senior Zane Galyan performs Masterof the House from the musical Les Miserab/esby Victor Hugo at Finale.
