lack Culture ClubIts FlyuStory By Margaret McGillivrayIts not just black people. There are other faces that can join and feel comfortablein there, said sophomore Earnest Morris. The friendly atmosphere of the Black CultureClub (BCC) drew in members who had even a remote interest in learning more about blackculture at Bloomington High School South. The open setting, the fun activities, and theemphasis on a minority group helped make BCC one of the most popular clubs at South.Members of the club worked to help minorities succeed and be treated with equality. I wanted to help minorities and do good for the school, said senior Brianna Peral. In addition to the cultural aspect of the club, the BCC celebrated African-Americanhistory throughout the month of February. The daily quotes read on the announcementshelped spread interest for the clubs Black History Month program. The highlight of theprogram, step dancing, was planned with the help of the IU step club. IU was involvedthe whole year and they came to all of the meetings, said Peral. The program turned out tohave been so successful that the BCC decided to begin holding this event annually. While the activities surrounding Black History Month were important to the clubmembers, they also spent time trying to solve modern problems. We usually talk aboutthings that give us stereotypes, or ones that we give ourselves, said junior Tia Senchuk. In addition to talking about current events that can categorize African- Americans, they can learn about the historical information that can sometimes be hidden from the modern world. I like to learn about black society. Its interesting to hear what people knowabout black culture, said Morris. In the end, the club was simply trying to publicize the culture and history of African- Americans. By being one of the few clubs to reach out to the community, as well as thediverse population of IU, the BCC quickly showed its determination to publicize a rich, butoften shielded, history to South. As a part of the Lady BCCs, senior Minae Choidances at the step program that was done during Black History Month. Although Choi wasntblack, she was still welcomed into the club.Senior Rhajaan Edwards dances as a part ofthe Lady BCCs. In addition to performing atnight, the dancers also performed during alllunches one day, which was a weekday surprise for the rest of the students and a previewfor the program.rtp>(Btach^Cutture CtubActivities |
