Students Explore Their Optionsclectic ElectivesStory By Kelly KishElectives at Bloomington High School South were classesthat most students looked forward to every day. Electiveclasses were classes that students got to choose and that had adifferent standard than the usual math or English class. Popularelective classes at South included Cold War, Film Literature,Printmaking, and Housing Interiors. One of the most popular classes for upperclassmen wasCold War taught by Mr. Dan Combs. The class covered recentAmerican history from 1900s Russia to the relationship theUSSR had with the United States leading up to 1991. Combsstarted the class two years ago, and it had become so full thatmore Cold War classes were added.Junior Hannah Miller said, I really enjoyed the classbecause its interesting and helped me understand the differentaspects of more recent U.S. History. Out of the few projectsin the class, Miller enjoyed her project on the suitcase bombs, because nobody knows where they are and its prettyinteresting because they could go off at any time, she said.To keep new electives coming, teachers proposed to theadministration council classes they were passionate about. Theclass then must have 20 or more students signed up for theclass to happen. But for Ms. Stephanie Benham who taughtPrintmaking, the rules were bent a little when the first classcount came in at 18. She said, I begged Mr. Veach to give it achance, and it was accepted... We are learning so much as wego.
