The opening of our schools mission statement read Bloomington High SchoolSouth strives to provide a learning environment that nurtures academic, personal, andsocial growth.Teachers and faculty made every effort to give students a place to excel inacademics; in return, students set high goals for themselves, ranging from being awardedfull-ride scholarships to placing first in national competitions.Seniors Elizabeth Beckett, Jordan Forney, Elizabeth Head, Frederick Kim, Kristin Miller, and Caitlin Van Kooten were all awarded full tuition scholarships for academics. Beckett was granted Purdues Beering Scholarship, worth over $250,000, whichwill take her through her doctorate or medical degree. Van Kooten was named Southsrecipient of the Wells Scholarship at Indiana University. The total scholarship amountawarded for the class of 2007 was a record 2.3 million dollars.In addition to accomplishing personal goals in school, many students wereinvolved in academic clubs, which were among the best in the state and the nation. Theboys chess team placed fifth in the state; freshman Joseph Hong made it to the IntelInternational Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, New Mexico for his workwith E. coli; and the Optimist newspaper staff again won a prestigious award from theNational Scholastic Press Association.Social growth was another goal that South set for its students, and this year thiswas accomplished through collaboration with real world applications. Ms. Cindy Kvaletaught her physics class how to make ice cream with dry ice at an end of the year party;HAM radio students hung out on the fourth floor where they attempted to talk to astronauts orbiting the earth; and the Solar Bike members took a trip to Neosho, Missouri together where they participated in the 13th annual Solar Rayce. The girls team placedfirst and the boys placed second overall.Students involvement in academics, both inside and outside of school, accomplished Souths mission of helping students grow, academically, personally and socially.Academics Z ^0^y%< Academics |
