^/he Six Minute PartyPassing PeriodsStory By Catherine McGillivrayBy the end of every day, students at South have spent 24 minutes each day walking throughthe halls; that is 1080 minutes students exhausted wandering to class. That means by the time seniorswalked across the stage at graduation, they have spent 72 hours at South not in a teachers room, but inthe hallway. This year, in order to liven things up, teachers and students worked hard to revitalize themonotonous six-minute walk. With the start of many new passing period traditions, the halls were alivewith the sound of music, and students packed enough partying into one passing period as possible. At the beginning of the year assistant principal Mr. Jay True started the trend of playing musicduring the passing periods on Fridays. It started with the Bloomington North football game. We weretrying to get people fired up, said Mr. True. The day of the cat fight, True played the number onesong, through the PA system, from each year the Panthers had won a football state championship.Senior football player Adam Beasley said the music, really got players pumped for the gameduring the school day. Normally the players excitement for the game started in the locker room beforekickoff, but this year the music got it rolling a few hours earlier. The feedback from the students was so positive that it became a weekly tradition for the mainoffice to play music on Fridays. Sophomore Monica Powell liked to dance to the music, especially theoldies stuff. Popular songs included Born to Be Wild, Jack and Diane, and Gettin Jiggy Wit It.Another new passing period tradition was Friday locker parties. Between fourth and fifthperiod a group of seniors with second-floor lockers would gather, eat food, listen to music andget excited about the weekend. Some of the themed parties included Jamaica Me Crazy andMediterranean Melee. Senior John Ray, a key organizer of the weekly festivities, said the Melee wasone of his favorite parties because he had gladiatorial fights and ate grapes. This years passing periods were not just a stroll to class- they were the start of traditions. From music to parties, passing periods were a time to get ready for the weekend, get geared up for theFridav night game and enjoy time with friends.(passing (Periods * ^^ J Student Life |
