Wrestungstory by Kourtney ParrottFrom the grueling practices to the drastic weight cuts and diets, the wrestlershave had their work cut out for them. Despite the hard work and the less-thanfavorable practices, wrestling is still considered a fun sport by those participating. When asked what he favored most about practices, sophomore Nick Samaro said,The best times are before practice starts and we just wrestle around like were prowrestlers. Though it may seem to by-standers as if the wrestling team has alwaysworked together, senior Chris Branam offers us a different point of view.At first, I think we had trouble coming together as a team, Branam said. Over theseason we learned to work together as a group and as a result I believe that thewrestling team is now the closest out of all the teams [at South]. Since the team wasable to pull together and work as one, they saw more victories than they would havehad they not strengthened their unity. The wrestlers had various rituals they did as a team and the one that seemed toprevail was the stylish change in hair length. When its time for sectionals we allshave our heads. Its tradition! Senior Chris Ferree said. But this year we were alittle easy on people so not everyone did it, adds Samaro. Many underclassmen stepped up to fill the shoes of graduated wrestling legends suchas Kraig Kinser and Justin Edwards. This was the last year for seniors Chris Branam,Nate Clark, Billy Conder, Derek Eads, Chris Ferree, Bryce Kent, and Tony Pope.South wrestling has many others to look forward to next year. I would say the peopleto carry on the tradition would be Tyler Goble and Kurt Wildman Kinser, Ferreesaid.Sophomore faul Young locks his opponent on the ground whilereaching tor back points. Young has been wrestling Varsity tor twoyears.Senior Chris ferree reaches out to his opponent whileforcing him to the floor, ferree tinihsed his fourth vear ofwrestling Varsity with a reccord of 3i-i2. |
