VarsityOLLEYBAUStory by Claire RivronThe stats from this years Varsity volleyball team reflect a tough season; however, any teammember will tell you what really counted: friendship and support.According to senior Nicole Ondrik, We were all good friends, [and] that made the seasonspecial— we were all really, really close. Junior Bridget Johnson agreed, saying that in this yearmore than in the past, teammates have been really good friends. Johnson appreciated the helpfulleadership of senior captains Ondrik and Elizabeth Morrison. They did a great job, she said, Theywere like our moms. On and off the court, the team members had a lot of admiration and supportfor one another.Despite some disappointing losses, the team kept in good spirits with different cheersbetween points and a march called, And Were Marching, before games to pump themselves up.There were many memorable funny moments from the season, including a pre-season canoe trip, and a time when senior Maryellen McClain was hit on the head with a shot from the other team. It[bounced] kinda high, so we were still able to play the ball and win the point, Ondrik recalled. Theteams standout freshman, Kala Zorn, was mentioned by junior Sarah Hayes: Everything funny onthe team had to do with her, she said.Summarizing the seasons accomplishments, Zorn recalled, Our record wasnt as good aswe wanted it to be; it was a tough season. In the end we really came together and appreciated eachother more.Running a play with front row hitters, junior Jessica Bush sets thball to hitter, senior Nicole Ondrik.
